DENOTATIONS

bread and onions

were once enough!

in the middle of berlin-mitte

the jews ate

caraway bread and onions

in some courtyard

on the stairs

between floors.

it was enough

to get full

with a little salt...

smell of bricks and canal water

in berlin

my great-grandmother went to the zoo

to lose her teddy bear.

a sign, of course

but for what?

who caninterpret it now?

bubbi bubbi,

were you there with the bears?

my boy, i don’t speak yiddish—

don’t talk to me in that foreign language!

nu, vos lohkt ir?

it smells of tar and chopped coconuts

far, far off

in an epic, tropical land

maybe even the ‘land ofisrael’

a friend pulls out his "jodorowsky classic tarot”

the latest craze.

he reads my cards

saying:

one, two, three you can’t be free

his fingers are green, mossy.

the night squats there, pulsating.

my friend shows his flawless yankee teeth:

a king hangs out from his castle

humbug

humbug

humbug

so, do we need a "great man"

a humboldt?

couldn’t wedecipher the cracks in the sidewalk?

but no! the symbolslanguish

in language’s seams

unextinguished!

limping—

but whole

in a voice

in a cellar

somewhere
