Jake Schneider

new slang (queen of the eyethorns)

alongside Marcel Seidel

anybody with a youth word has probably got

a future too. which is why we’re living in this palace.

no, this villa—heavens no: this “forfend.” the location

of the lisbon room with the silver kettle, the lace

parasol. which is where the committee votes

on this year’s youth word, zeitgeist of the lips.

the g-word, the b-word, the m-word. every

word we dare not speak gets flipped upside

down like a perilously furtive frenchman. or we hunt

like cockney bards for a rhyme that works, then

slice it in half. potent. parve. pachyderm. to dip.

a name for each tribe. a thousand pen-names for one pen.

the very dirtiest words have sacred etymologies,

the kind you wear upon your skin, upon your head.

each word dives into the dark like a way of doing.

on dipped dishes, we may eat with dirty knives.

today we are playing cards against humanity

and already forgetting our own inside jokes.
